US senators reach agreement on tougher gun control

US Democratic and Republican Senators Agree on Key Measures to Reduce Gun Violence

U.S. senators have reached a bipartisan agreement on the main provisions of a bill to tighten gun control in the United States, reports The New York Times.

According to the report, a group of 10 Democrats and 10 Republicans approved proposals to fund mental health resources; improving school safety; providing grants to states to implement the so-called “red flag” law, which allows the confiscation of weapons from people who may pose a potential danger.

Senators also propose tougher checks if the buyer of weapons is people under the age of 21.

“Today we are announcing a sound bipartisan proposal to protect American children, keep our schools safe, and reduce the threat of violence across our nation,”— said in a joint statement by 20 senators.

They emphasized that now American families are scared, and their duty— help restore their sense of safety and security in society.

Now a group of senators must finalize the bill and gain enough support in both houses to pass the law, the newspaper notes.

In early June, US President Joe Biden called on Congress to tighten control over the circulation of firearms in the country. He proposed to ban the sale of assault weapons and magazines for a large number of cartridges to ordinary citizens.

If a ban is not possible, in his opinion, it is necessary to raise the age at which you can buy weapons from 18 to 21 years. Biden also pointed to a “serious mental health crisis” in the USA.

May 24, there was a shooting at a school in Uvalda, Texas. The fire was opened by 18-year-old former student Salvador Ramos. He was carrying a pistol and a semi-automatic rifle. As a result, 19 children and two adults were killed, the shooter himself died during the arrest.

After that, the US President announced that he was tired of inaction on the issue of tightening gun laws and called for resisting the gun lobby. He recalled that since 2012 there have been more than 900 cases of mass shooting in the country.
